John Philip Sousa's love of horses is reflected in this delightful march composition, "The Black Horse Troop." Composed in 1924 for Troop A of the Cleveland National Guard, this wonderful march has a character and swagger unlike any other. The 6/8 meter and Sousa's melodic genius create an astonishing musical image of a horseback unit on the move. One of the March King's most beloved and most frequently requested marches. Outstanding!

Nonantum Bulgar - Hankus Netsky
Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. Learn more on YouTube! BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. In War Time - David Del Tredici
David Del Tredici's In Wartime - the first work for wind band by one of America's masters of orchestral music - matches its emotional depth with immediate musical appeal. The opening hymn laces fragments of Abide With Me with swirling counterpoint, while the following Battlemarch brings an ominous march-theme into a frenzied conflict with the Persian national song, Salamati, Shah! Daring, brilliantly orchestrated and absolutely unique, In Wartime is a landmark in the repertoire. (18:30)

Ungarsk marsj - Hector Berlioz
The "Rkczi March" (Hungarian March) was the unofficial state anthem of Hungary before Ferenc Klcsey wrote the Himnusz which is today the official national anthem of Hungary. The first version of this march-song was probably created around 1730 by one or more anonymous composers, although tradition says that it was the favorite march of Francis Rkczi II. That early version called back Francis Rkczi II to save his people. It was very popular in the 18th century but in the 19th century the more refined Rkczi March became prevalent. Hector Berlioz included the music in his composition "La Damnation de Faust" in 1846, and Franz Liszt wrote a number of arrangements, includinghis Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15, based on the theme. The march gave its name to a 1933 Austrian-Hungarian feature film - Rakoczy-Marsch This arrangement is based on Berlioz instrumentation and phrasing from his Hungarian March, but in the form of the 19th century Rkczi March

Norsk Kunstnerkarneval Op.14 - Johan S. Svendsen
This well-known work was composed in Christiania in 1874 for a burlesque Carnival in "Kunstnerforeningen".An early title for the work was "Bryllup paa Dovre". The manuscript score and parts at The National Library in Oslo of the early version with this title have much more music than the version printed by C.F. Peters, Leipzig in 1881. The form in this first version was ABA with an additional trio part that later were discarded. In the trio Svendsen used the melody Sterreisen (Os har gjort kva gjeras skulle) from Lindeman's collection of Norwegian Folk Tunes. (Vol. I/115). In the A-part a wedding tune (Bruraslaatten) from Sogn is used (Lindeman Vol. I/476). The Carnival's literary theme was the connection between the cold north and the warm south. Musically the south is represented in Svendsen's music by Raffaele Sacoo's melody from 1835 "Te voglio bene assai".I believe that if Norwegian quality music from this period is going to be performed, it must at least be available. There must be editions for modern instrumentations with full scores. I do this as my contribution to expand and enrich the repertoire for Concert Bands.- Stig Nordhagen -
