This 4-movement suite tells the story of the beautiful French town 'Tulle' that was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon. The composer depicts the history of the town, as well as important events such as the bloodbath during World War II, the fabric 'tulle' after which the town is named and the festive annual fair. Since Tulle is also known for the production of accordions, the composer added an 'ad libitum' accordion part. A really charming and stylish concert or contest work! Duration: 9.00

Call of the Aboriginals - Uluru - Kata Tjuta was commissioned by Nara Municipal Ichijo Senior High School Symphonic Band, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan, to commemorate their 60th anniversary. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is an immense monolith rising in the vastness of the Australian outback. Famously also known as Ayers Rock, it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is a sacred site for the Aboriginal people of the area, the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, but has also become a popular tourist destination, creating cultural and environmental conflicts. This work, which is written in a style typical of the composer, tells a dramatic tale adventure inspired by the life of the indigenous people and the magnificent scenery of Uluru. The Curse of the Mermaid tells the story of a greedy and wealthy fisherman wanting to make money in any way possible. When his business starts to fail, he puts the blame on the mermaids. One day, the fisherman kills a mermaid, who casts a spell on him shortly before she disappears into the water. The composition is in the form of a symphonic poem, starting slow and then mysteriously opening up revealing a fantastic colourful world of sounds and motion. There are various moments during the piece where the composer includes broad and beautiful melodic material, as well as surprising effects and great rhythmical interest. This is a challenging but great piece for concerts or contests! Duration: 11.45

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate.This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.Duration: 8:15

New Zealand born, Sir Dean Goffin, was son of composer Henry Goffin who has previously been featured in this series as he composed the march - The Red Shield. Dean was a Salvation Army Bandmaster before enlisting into the New Zealand armed forces during the 2nd World War. He became Bandmaster of the newly formed band of the 20th Infantry Battalion and later on the 4th Infantry Battalion. Whilst he was serving in the Middle East he composed this march initially under another name 'Bel Hamid' The march was later adapted and renamed 'Anthem of the Free'.
