ivind Westby has written a number of excellent but demanding instrumental arrangements for Concert Band. In the present one, he has transcribed five of the most famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) grew up near Ipanema, the famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. His big break through and most creative period came in the 50's and 60's which gave him the status as the greatest Brazilian composer of all times. Together with Stan Getz and Jo�o and Astrud Gilberto he recorded one of the best selling jazz-albums of all times, an album which feature several of his most famous compositions. His inspiration includes another Brazilian great; Pixinguinha, but also classical composers like Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He died in NYC in 1994 after composing approx. 400 works. He is recognized all over the world as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle-belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers' choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. Dance of the Whaleuses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.

This work was inspired by the legend of the Klokkeven, in which a church bell plays the leading part. It forms a connecting thread throughout the composition. The work consists of three continuous movements, each with its own atmosphere and character. In The Black Robber, we hear dark sounds in the brass and fast chromatic motifs. The Swamp contains mysterious low parallel fifths, imploring solos and chafing dissonant harmonies. Finally, in The Bell sweetly musing solos are hopefully accompanied by the church bell ringing from a distance. After a number of changes in tempo, the music ends in a grand tutti.
