Festival Prelude Ad Excel (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Festival Prelude 'Ad Excel' was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for 'to excel' but also celebrates the band's anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close. Duration: 5.00

Joyous Festival - Jeanne Vultaggio
Celebrate the warmth and joy of family and community with Joyous Festival, by Jeanne Vultaggio, an original work for Hanukkah inspired by Klezmer style and depicting a lively celebration. Syncopated rhythms and repetition create a festive folk dance feel accessible to your developing musicians. A slower legato section, offering expressive opportunities, represents the sunset gathering to light the menorah's candles, with a gradually building ascending scale motif in the bells representing the lighting of one additional candle on each of the eight days of Hanukkah.

A bold trumpet motive will grab attention right from the start! What follows is a majestic theme, tuneful and bright, that will let young musicians sound their best. Colorful writing, lovely counterpoint in the woodwinds and good use of pitched percussion are just a couple of the notable elements. This is a solid choice for festival or concert programs!

Irish Festival - Quincy C. Hilliard
Quincy C. Hilliard uses two Irish folksongs as the inspiration for this new festival work. A drone opens the work which quickly moves to a simple, yet creative setting of The Last Rose of Summer. A slow, lyrical treatment of the same folk song serves as the middle section of the piece. The final section is based on The Rake of Mallow and makes use of ample percussion as the piece propels toward a powerful conclusion.

Festival Fanfare and March - Chris Bernotas
From the brilliant opening fanfare to the noble march, this little masterwork sounds more like an adventure movie score than a young band piece. This is a creative and spirited work for introducing students to 6/8 meter. Sounding a lot harder than it really is, this is a very likeable piece for opening a concert, or music festival.
