Notes from the Road - Franco Cesarini

"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds." - Edward AbbeyNotes from the Road was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the music Federation of the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, as compulsory piece for the second category of the Canton Festival in 2023. The piece is written in the typical form of an Italian overture, with the sequence of veloce-lento-veloce tempi. Reflections on life and the street as its metaphor were the driving elements in composing this piece. The way represents a symbol characteristic to many cultures, so much so that the verb "to walk" or the word "path" indicate a way of being in life and of fulfilling oneself. "Making one's way" means affirming oneself; "Having a way" indicates one's own and personal approach. The road is the most beautiful metaphor of life: there is a departure, a destination, and in the middle lies a path that is sometimes winding, with challenges to overcome and directions to take.An introspective piece, an invitation to each of us to reflect on our own "path".

    Supremacy - Sean O'Loughlin

Supremacy is an engaging work for the beginning concert band. The piece provides many important teaching opportunities to reinforce rhythm, counting, and dynamics in the students' development. The rhythms in the wind parts are limited to quarter, half, and whole notes, and the music incorporates basic dissonance and resolution into the fabric of the piece. A perfect piece for the students' first experience performing at contest/festival.

The Last Chivalrous Knight - Richard Summers

Knights in shining armor, damsels in distress and jousting come to mind when you hear this original composition from composer Richard Summers. Students are intrigued by the music of the Medieval Times, and it has crept its way into many video game themes and epic sports themes. This piece brings it all into a format for young bands to enjoy. Richard has provided some nice modal writing and excellent counterpoint to give it the flavor of the time period. Your band will sound full with this program piece that can also be used for contest or festival.

    Turkish Fragments - Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov

Pursuing his interest in the Turkish peoples, the composer created this work for orchestra in 1930. It is a richly melodic suite notable for its characteristically oriental turns of phrase. This work is presented in four movements: Caravan, which depicts a steady journey over rolling sand dunes; At Rest, alternately tranquil and spirited; Night, serene in nature with a slight touch of mystery; and Festival, a dance-like finale with unyielding exuberance. All the movements use material from folk music of the region combined with a wonderful pallet of wind-instrumental colors. An exotic and colorful Turkish fabric in music.

Call of the Valley - Jacob de Haan

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.
