Buzzing Polka, composed in 1993, is one of the earliest compositions by Lszl Dubrovay (*1943) for concert band, which has become a huge success due to use of special timbres and effects which had been unexploited in the genre earlier. Already the title tells that classical musical values and surprising moments of special brass instrument techniques can be both found in the work. Every second in the striking character piece is made interesting by the excellent balance between the pillar-like harmonies enriched by distant overtones and horizontal melody formation. Written for the centennial of Loyola University, New Orleans and premiered by the Loyola University Band on April 12, 2012 with the composer conducting. This fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("to the greater glory of God") and is based on the notes A, D, G. The fanfare opens with timpani, a tintinnabulum of bells and brass, and wolf calls in the horns. A martial hymn tune appears which evokes the soldierly order of Ignatius Loyolas early years. The work closes with a rhythmic ostinato based on the words "Fight, fight, fight, ye men of the South!" The composer is a graduate of Loyola and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

Spirit of Olympus was commissioned by director Elaine Wersky and the Olympus Music Program on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Olympus Junior High School. It was asked that the celebratory work also also provide a middle section that could serve the school as an alma mater for the school. The true spirit of the student body is reflected in the great opening fanfare in the high brass with strong support from the percussion section. The alma mater is first presented by the full woodwind choir supported with glistening metallic percussion as accompaniment. A lush, full band treatment follows, emphasizing the majestic import of the meaningful melody. An energetic finale brings the work to a fittingly proud and regal close.

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.
