VIEW SCORE PDF This beautiful and serene setting of the well known carol Quem Pastores Laudavere features as part of a suite by Kevin Norbury entitled A Renaissance Christmas (available from BrookWright Music). This 14th-century melody was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. Inspired by the majestic Alaskan landscape, Glacier Bay provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic and expressive playing by the young musicians. Following a brief introduction, the main theme is presented first by the trumpets and then by the low brass and trumpets in a lively and flowing manner. The active syncopated accompaniment patterns in the low brass and woodwinds provide an effective contrast to the melody. The B section of the piece moves smoothly into a stately, alla breve tempo with a clarinet choir making the first presentation of the melody. Following a very peaceful conclusion to the B section, an abbreviated restatement of the A section melody leads to the dynamic ending. Duration: 3.30

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation. VIEW SCORE PDF This rousing and pulsating work by Kevin Norbury forms part of the suite A Renaissance Christmas, also published by BrookWright Music. It is based on three popular carols - In Dulci Jubilo, Good Christian men, rejoice! and Ding-dong merrily on high. This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In Dulci Jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. Dance of the SatyrsOne of my favourite Shakespeare plays is The Winter's Tale, and I have written music for three completely different productions during my time as Head of Music to the Royal Shakespeare Company. One, starring Judi Dench as both the mother, Hermione and her daughter, Perdita, had a big band Tribal Love-Rock score; another had a more classical, but timeless feel to it, and the last was an excellent small-scale touring production, for which I was allowed only a handful of instruments. It is from this source that the basic themes for Bohemian Dances, and an earlier version Three Dances for Clarinet Choir, have emerged. Act IV of the play is set in the kingdom of Bohemia - hence the title of the work.Shakespeare calls for "A Dance of Shepherds and Shepherdesses", which gives Florizel, the son of Polixenes, (King of Bohemia) a chance to become better acquainted with the beautiful Perdita, the lost daughter of Leontes, (King of Sicilia). This movement is written in seemingly tricky and ever-changing metres, but is rhythmically quite logical and melodically catchy.The slower second movement 'Florizel and Perdita' is the lovers' pas de deux: a gentle, slow waltz-like tune, initially presented by the principal oboe, is contrasted with a lndler-like double time melody, at the end of which a solo clarinet makes a link to the last movement.'Dance of the Satyrs' is a rip-roaring, foot-stamping dance performed in the play by 'three carters, three shepherds, three neat-herds, and three swine-herds', who enter in outrageous costumes representing the lecherous half-man, half-goat of Greek mythology. This dance is referred to as a "gallimaufry of gambols" - now where have I heard that word before?! - GW

The Call of the Righteous - Score and Parts - Leslie Condon
Program NotesCall of the Righteous is a tone poem that uses the Gospel song melody "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" as its main theme. An unforgiving opening unison trumpet fanfare leads into the first statement of the tune, which then appears, either in its entirety or in fragments, throughout the piece alongside further thematic material derived from the opening fanfare theme. The reflective central section contains a beautiful original melody, introduced by the clarinet and developed elsewhere, before the music reverts to ideas derived from the opening section, introduced by a recapitulation of the opening fanfare figure, which is further developed to bring the music to a thrilling and dramatic conclusion.Although the music has its creative roots in religious doctrine, it has a lasting and popular appeal that makes it accessible and listenable at every level, with plenty to challenge on both technical and musical levels.
