Dvorak's Symphony No.4 (1874) was a pivotal work in the career of this famous Bohemian composer. In the work Dvorak is finally freed from the influence of other composers and succeeds in producing a work in his own unique style. The slow introduction of the second movement (Andante sostenuto e molto cantabile) however clearly showed the influence of Wagner's Tannhauser, but the l'Alla Marcia du Scherzo is again typical Dvorak. You can also hear the obvious references to the traditional music of Bohemia which played an important part in late works of Dvorvak. A terrific classical work for your concert repertoire. Monticello is the name of a little place northeast of Rome where my wife and I have rented a simple home for more than 20 years. We participated intensively in the cultural life of the community where there was also a little band, the Banda Municipale Cornicolana, which consisted of about 55 wind players, mostly youngsters. One day, the "Il Direttore" came to me and asked if I would like to write a march for them, which I naturally did. It became the Marcia a Montecelio. After 14 rehearsals, with everyone tired, perspiring and red in the face, we were forced to give up. The march was too difficult for them. I then wrote another, easier march for them to perform at the forthcoming feast of San Michaeli. The Montecelio march was composed on pure inspiration in just two days. It is written in the Italian style - with a pinch of Sousa.

Marcia - Dag Ivar Wiren
Dag Wirn (1905 1986) studied organ and composition at the College of Music in Stockholm 1926 1931, and lived in Paris 1931 1934, where he continued his studies in composition and instrumentation. His list of works comprises mainly instrumentalmusic, such as five symphonies, five string quartets, several overtures and quite a lot of music for film and theatre.Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 11, was premiered by Stockholm Chamber Orchestra under Tobias Wilhemi, in October 1937,and was an immediate success. The Serenade has four movements, and the finishing Marcia has gained great popularity, especially after it was theme tune for the television series Monitor, which wasaired 1958 1965.
