Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) once remarked: "My life is a novel that greatly interests me." Experiences in his personal life had a great influence on his compositions. Symphonie Fantastique, written in 1830, is also autobiographical: he subtitled the work Episode in the Life of an Artist. The symphony echoes his feelings for an actress. The Marche au Supplice (march into torture) he described as: "The artist dreams he has killed his beloved, that he has been sentenced to death and is being led to the scaffold. The procession moves to the notes of a march that is now sombre and turbulent, now radiant and stately, and in which boisterous outbursts suddenly dissolve into the heavy sound of marching feet." 0:04:50

Two Songs Without Words was composed in 1906 and was dedicated to Ralph Vaughan Williams and is similar in style to his two suites for band. The Country Song opens with the principal theme as an unaccompanied clarinet solo, followed by its repetition in the full woodwind section. The main theme returns in a "maestoso" setting before fading into a quite closing. Marching Song is characterized by a distinctive running sixteenth note figure. The principal melody, first played by the low woodwinds, is punctuated by these same running sixteenth note fragments. Both themes are again repeated with much variation before the tempo picks up into a short coda-style ending.

E for Eternity was composed in memory of Nathan Luke Ray, a tubaist who had always dreamed of playing in the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band. Nathan died in a car accidenton on his way home from realizing that dream - performing at his first game as a Fresno State student, a game nationally televised on ESPN. This piece was written by his teacher; the title came from his classmates, in memory of this vibrant young musician.

In the fall of 2021, as occurs countless times across the United States, band director Darin Johns was traveling with his marching band to a Friday night football game. Tragically, a wrong-way driver struck the Andrews Band bus, taking the lives of both Darin and the bus driver. Over the next few months, tributes to Darin came in waves, culminating in a 1,000-member parade with 30 different bands at Christmastime. The Association of Texas Small-School Bands, of which Darin and the Andrews Band were a part, commissioned me to write a piece in honor of Mr. Johns. The music reflects the waves of memory that one experiences when contemplating the deepest of thoughts. First nebulous, sometimes sharply focused, resonating motifs, highs and lows. The four-chord chaconne figure is the unifying core of the work. It grounds the various melodies as they enter and return, sometimes densely paired, sometimes transparently isolated. The themes are structured as an arch form ABCBA, but as they recur, they are added together, giving them more density, as if the memories overlap, before the calmness, first heard as an ethereal haze, recurs.

Ceremonial - Ferrer Ferran
Ceremonial was composed for the opening of the Auditorio Florida, the home base of the Banda Primitiva de Paiporta. The composition consists of three movements. I. Introduction - The introduction is presented in the form of a fanfare; it heralds the ceremony in a majestic way. II. March - The marching music leads to an expressive and delicate melody that contrasts with the other movements.III. Dance and finale - A dance concludes the ceremony. The dance, in combination with the melodic lines, radiates energy and grandeur, and finds its climax in a grandiose moment, which every ceremony deserves.

Third Movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont.Imagine a band far off in the distance marching toward you - soft at first, the music becomes louder and louder; the red capes of the band sway in the wind, getting closer and closer. It was this image that inspired Flying Colors. Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a march in his concerts, and the hallmark of his band was their red capes. The work begins very softly with a distant snare drum beat. The trumpets enter quietly with the melody, and with each new melodic entry the music grows and intensifies to a roaring finish. This is a fresh new take on a march, and is sure to please players and audiences alike! Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op.54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short- tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households.Duration: 3.45
