Hooray For Our Side (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Langford, Gordon

Music to wave flags by is the clue to the spirit of Hooray for our Side. In essence, it is a march. The composer had in mind, however, spectators at some competitive sport, encouraging and cheering on their particular team - hence the half-time and full-time whistles. This is all strictly for fun - the competitive spirit - and comradeship.

March (from Jazz Suite No.2) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shostakovich, Dmitri - De Meij, Johan

In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite No.1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music.Duration: 3:00

Hampshire March - Gustav Holst / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Based on the original opening of the original introduction for , Holst replaced this section with the now-familiar morris dance tune, "Glory Shears." The 38-measure passage (crossed out in the autograph score) draws upon the English folk song, "Young Reilly," and presents an alluring work in itself for younger players. Serious band literature for your developing band! (2:15) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Funeral March - Edvard Grieg / arr. Jan Erickson, Fennell Frederick

Written in 1866 the day he heard his good friend and Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak died, the original monument to the memory of his dear friend was composed by Edvard Grieg for piano. One year later, Grieg arranged the work for military band, transposing it to g minor, and he so treasured this music that he carried it with him on all journeys, and the orchestra setting was played at his interment. This transcription for the contemporary wind ensemble was made, appropriately, by the Norwegian band enthusiast and authority Jan Ericksen and edited by famed band master Frederick Fennell.

Funeral March of a Marionette - Charles Gounod / arr. Stephen Squires

Famous for its use as the Alfred Hitchcock television theme, Charles Gounod's was originally conceived by the composer as a tongue-in-cheek parody of a music critic that he had come to detest. Now, Stephen Squires has skillfully arranged this work for Grade 3 bands. Interpreted with a sly wink of the eye, this classic novelty should be great fun for players and audience alike!
