    Copplia - Léo Delibes

Copplia, a ballet in two acts and three scenes, was premiered at the Opra National in Paris on 25 May 1870. Despite its early success, performances were interrupted because of the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris in 1870-1871, and also because of the death from smallpox of the young principal ballerina, Giuseppina Bozzacchi, on her 17th birthday. This ballet represented a courageous break with references to supernatural and ethereal spirits so dear to the Romantic esthetic, to address instead a world of adventure. Swanhilde sees, on the balcony of Dr. Copplius, a beautiful girl: is she the daughter of Copplius that no one has ever seen? So, with a series of adventures, Swanhilde and her girlfriends, taking advantage of his absence, manage to enter into the house of Dr. Copplius, a toy manufacturer and a magician. Here, they discover that Copplia, the beautiful daughter, is nothing else but a mechanical doll. Meanwhile Franz, the boyfriend of Swanhilde, sneaks into the house through the balcony. The sudden return of Copplius scares away the kids: only Swanhilde (hidden behind a curtain) and Franz remain. Copplius is able to sedate Franz, who has since declared his love for Copplia and, laying him close to the mechanical doll he tries, thanks to his magic, to take Franz's spirit and transfer it to Copplia. Swanhilde is able to intervene and wakes Franz; she tells him about the deception and escapes with him, while Copplius disconsolately embraces his mechanical doll. The ballet ends with the marriage of Swanhilde and Franz. Lo Delibes (1836 - 1891) was a student of Adolphe Adam at the Paris Conservatoire. The composer of several operettas, he reached success with the ballet Copplia. He wrote other ballets, among which the best known are Sylvia and La Source, and several operas including Lakm.

    The Venetian Collection

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century. The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection.

    Serenity - Ola Gjeilo

Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo is an emerging star in the realm of choral works, and also with music for wind band. Similar to his earlier band works Meridian and The Spheres, Serenity is based on a successful choral work. Beautifully arranged by J. Eric Wilson along with the composer, this version for wind band maintains all the wonder and magic of the original work. The opening is ethereal and somber, with sustained chords in clarinets and bowed percussion supporting a delicate oboe solo. The middle section shifts the principal modality from minor to major, and the layering orchestration and rising tessitura creates a tremendous rush of energy that leads to a triumphant climax. The closing section returns to the timbre of the opening, but now painted with hopefulness and healing.
