Four Scottish Dances - Malcolm Arnold

These dances were composed early in 1957, and are dedicated to the BBC Light Music Festival. They are all based on original melodies but one, the melody of which is composed by Robert Burns. This Classic Band Edition is the definitive wind ensemble orchestration of worldwide renown, as referenced in the composer's own Program Notes:"The first dance is in the style of a slow strathspey -- a slow Scottish dance in 4/4 meter -- with many dotted notes, frequently in the inverted arrangement of the 'Scottish snap.' The name was derived from the strath valley of Spey. The second, a lively reel, begins in the key of E-flat and rises a semitone each time it is played until the bassoon plays it, at a greatly reduced speed, in the key of G. The final statement of the dance is at the original speed in the home key of E-flat.The third dance is in the style of a Hebridean song and attempts to give an impression of the sea and mountain scenery on a calm summer's day in the Hebrides. The last dance is a lively fling, which makes a great deal of use of the open string pitches of the violin (saxophones in the band edition)."

I Don't Know Why! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

I Don't Know Why is an unashamed homage to Stevie Wonder although there is not a note of his music in it. The piece follows the format of verse, chorus and then a shout chorus. It mostly needs a light, swing feel to it except for a bridge section (letters B and F) which needs to be straight. The shout chorus is a little gymnastic but apart from that it should be fun to play and hopefully not too technically challenging.Duration: 3.00

Nearest Thing by Far to Heaven (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

An expressive solo for flute and band, this slow, blue-tinged piece is the result of the opportunity given by the Covid lockdown of 2020 to look anew at some old songs. In this one, a fairly straightforward but expressive melodic line is stated in its original form then repeated in a much expanded and occasionally florid setting, allowing the soloist to cover a range from low C up to top A. Eventually the music returns to the tranquillity of the opening. The band accompaniment was written in 2024 and is kept light but colourful allowing the soloist to be expressive without fighting to project through the texture.Duration: 3.45

In the Air (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oswald, Gerald

The composition is upbeat, dynamic, and the notes dance. There is no story to tell, but simply a mood of cheerfulness and levity. In the Air expresses a consistently joyful, light-hearted and positive vibe through its mischievously playful motifs; the music blows through as if a light breeze, a fresh wind. Gerald Oswald was born in 1968 in Gross-St. Florian. He completed his education as a trumpeter at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He further pursued studies in conducting and composition under Franz Cibulka at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz, Thomas Doss at the Music and Arts Private University of Vienna, the Music School Leonding, and the C. Monteverdi Conservatory in Bolzano. His compositions for wind orchestras are successfully performed worldwide.Duration: 7.15

General Sherman (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jeanbourquin, Marc

General Sherman is a giant sequoia situated in the Sequoia National Park, in California. The naturalist James Wolverton named it in homage to the famous American general William Tecumseh Sherman. The impressive character of this sequoia inspired the composer, but the introduction could also evoke General Sherman arriving in the distance. Marc Jeanbourquin imagined how this giant could be in all its grandeur, attempting to climb into the foliage to find the light that filters from the top. But energetic passages indicate that the presence of the general is never far. The work concludes with a reminiscence of the initial theme, full of mystery.Duration: 5.15
