Using the concept of the summits, this piece explores the rush of adrenaline, the pounding of the heart, and the sheer joy of being one with nature. The middle slower section represents the pitfalls and difficulties of climbing the mountains, demonstrated by the several accidentals and mature chordal progressions. Finally, the end brings the climber's triumphant return to base camp! 1st trumpet's highest note is G.

A commission by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West allowed Ewazen to consider the ten years following the events of 9/11/2001, resulting in A Time of Strife, a Time of Peace. The first movement considers the long wars and the losses entailed through soaring lyrical lines above a rhythmic, pounding accompaniment, as Ewazen puts it. The second movement is a bittersweet celebration on the death of the perpetrator and a future of joy, peace, and life. Ewazen says, A burst of joyous energy bringing this chapter in our history to a close.

Downshifting - Dan Welcher
Commissioned by a consortium of 20 high school and university bands coordinated by Scott Hanna of the University of Texas at Austin, Downshifting is inspired by Welcher's joy of bicycle riding. Welcher explains in the program note: When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting... With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it's possible to keep one's legs going at a constant speed (for me, q = 126) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing Downshifting, which keeps the same mathematical inner pulse,'shifting' (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes.

The subject of this composition is Febal, who - together with his companions - travels to the "otherworld", also known asthe Island of the Blessed, where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections, called Isle of Joy, Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld, which acts as a sort of leitmotif.
