The Gladiator (March) - John Philip Sousa

A lesser-known but unforgettable Sousa march is presented in a terrific arrangement for the modern concert band by the expert Andrew Balent. The opening idea has an intriguing tonal ambiguity (is it major or minor?) and the second strain, introduced by the saxophones, is a real Sousa gem. Wolverine March - John Philip Sousa

In 1881, after being named conductor of the United States Marine Band, Sousa composed six new marches to add to the bands repertoire. One of them, Wolverine March, was "respectfully dedicated to His Excellency Hon. David H. Jerome, Governor of Michigan, and Staff." Lively, bright, and stylish, its tuneful quality makes it a natural march addition to concert band programs. As an additional note, Sousa wrote another march in 1926 which he called The Pride of the Wolverines; and while the titles are similar, they are distinctly separate marches and should not be confused with each other.
