    Steel Driving Man

This piece is based on the legend of John Henry. Despite being considered folklore, John Henry appears to be based on a true story of a powerful steel driving man who was part of an 1800's railroad tunneling crew. The music depicts the intensity and exertion of a legendary contest between John Henry and a new steam powered machine, which he ultimately won. A three-note motif represents Henry as the music moves through dramatic character and tempo changes, including a moment for the entire band to sing!

    Eiger - James Swearingen

Heroic themes abound as noted composer James Swearingen weaves a tapestry of musical styles to depict the emotional story of John Harlin. At the age of nine, John lost his father when he tragically fell 4000 ft. to his death while attempting to climb the mountain known as Eiger (pronounced eye-ger). The Eiger North Face is considered to be the most treacherous climb in all of Europe. Yet, forty years later John, with a burning desire to reconnect with his father, began the perilous journey of climbing the mountain with the nearly impossible goal of reaching the summit. Brilliantly scored, simply stunning and beautifully breathtaking!

In Flanders Fields - Guillaume Détrez

"In Flanders Fields" is a play recounting the Battle of Vimy Ridge (France) which took place from April 9 to 12, 1917. The introduction refers to the thousands of graves found at the site of Notre-Dame de Lorette. Then begins the episode of preparation and fierce battle. Thanks to the Canadian Expeditionary Force that came as reinforcements, the battle was won and the site secured at 6 a.m. (brass choir accompanied by 6 bells). The title of this work also refers to a poem by John Mac Rae located at the entrance to the memorial museum."In Flanders Fields"By Col. John McCrae,In Flanders Fields The poppies blowBetween the crosses row on rowThat mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead, short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved and now we lieIn Flanders Fields.Take up our quarrel with the foeTo you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch, be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us, who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders Fields

Wind In The Reeds - Philip Sparke

Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson, an army bandsman, teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature, evoking images conjured up by the 'play on words' in the title, but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist.

The Duke of Albany - Jacob de Haan

This suite tells the story of John Stewart, the Duke of Albany (the old name for the Kingdom of Scotland) who lived from 1484 to 1536, and of Anne de la Tour, Countess of Auvergne. The first majestic movement is about John Stewart, who leaves for Auvergne in order to marry Anne de la Tour. The second movement begins beautiful and romantic describing the romance between Anne de la Tour and the Duke, followed by sounds of despair and loneliness. The celebratory finale describes the construction of a new chapel and the population dancing and celebrating.
