The American composer John Tatgenhorst (East Liverpool, Ohio, 1938) started composing works for school bands. Among his numerous band compositions the overture 'Tanglewood' was very successsful. The work 'Above and Beyond' is a spectacular composition for symphonic band, whose ambition matches its title. There is an extended percussion part requiring six players and there are also parts for piano, harp and violoncello. It was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Washington and its conductor Alan Bonner.

In 1994 composer (Sir) Elton John and scriptwriter Tim Rice worked together for the first time on the soundtrack for Walt Disney's cartoon 'The Lion King' which was turned into a very successful Broadway musical in 1997. Both artists joined forces again and this resulted in their new musical 'Aida', based on the classical love story of the Egyptian warrior Ramads, loved by two women. Ton van Grevenbroek arranged the finest tunes for symphonic band.

In 1890 'The High School Cadets', a popular drill team attached to the very first high school in Washington D.C., asked John Philip Sousa to write a march for the group. They requested a 'better' march than the one Sousa had written for their rivals 'The National Fencibles'. Indeed, The High School Cadets became one of the most popular of Sousa's 136 marches. Pi Scheffer wrote this fine arrangement with Dixieland combo, which was made extremely popular by the recording made by the famous Dutch Swing College Band.

At the time this march was written, Sousa was living in Philadelphia and had not yet begun his Marine Band career - but he was an accomplished composer who already had 34 publications to his credit. However, the march was not published for band until after he left the Marine Band and formed his professional band. 1879 was a very eventful year for John Philip Sousa. He was a successful conductor, conducting Gilbert and Sullivans musical comedy, H.M.S. Pinafore, the year before he became the leader of the United States Marine Band, and it was the year he got married. It was also the year he composed Resumption March. The title was a reference to the resumption of the United States to use gold and silver coins following the post-Civil War inflation and depression. The march was published the same year in Philadelphia by the J. W. Pepper music publishing firm.
