The T-Bone Concerto was Johan de Meij's first composition for solo instrument and symphonic band. It consists of three movements called respectively 'Rare', 'Medium' and 'Well Done'. In addition to the solo trombone, an important role has been allotted to a kind of chamber music ensemble within the band. This group introduces new thematic material and accompanies the soloist, thus creating a delightful transparant accompaniment. The ensemble consists of a double wind quintet (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 french horns and 2 bassoons) plus a cor anglais and a double bass. Part I is written in the A-B-A form and allow the soloist to display both the technical and the lyricalcharacteristics of the instrument.

The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements.The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren? Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren? Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection. The Catskill Mountains is a beautifully preserved region in Upstate New York, flanked to the east by the Hudson River. From the moment Johan de Meij and his wife settled in 2008 in Saugerties, a quaint Hudson Valley town 100 miles north of Manhattan, he started immersing himself into the area's rich musical history. Discovering a fascinating mix of American, Irish and Scottish folk music, ultimately, it was not easy to choose from such abundance. In the end Johan de Meij ended up using the following songs The Foggy Dew, Last Winter was a Hard One, A Poor and Foreign Stranger, The Bluestone Quarries, and The Arkansas Traveller. The music makes a side trip to The Old Tobacco Box before coming to a festive conclusion.Duration: 8:45

£242.00Dutch Masters Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer's Love Letter and Steen's Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer's Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009. Duration: 21.00
