Revised 2023 editionJohan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The first movement is a musical portrait of the wizard Gandalf, one of the principal characters of the trilogy. His wise and noble personality is expressed by a stately motif which is used in a different form in movements IV and V. The sudden opening of the Allegro vivace is indicative of the unpredictability of the grey wizard, followed by a wild ride on his beautiful horse, Shadowfax.Duration: 6.30

Les Pecheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) is an opera in three acts by French composer Georges Bizet, who particularly made his fame with his opera Carmen. The friendship duet Au fond du temple saint, generally known as The Pearl Fishers Duet, is one of the best known in the opera literature. This arrangement for two trombones was written for and dedicated to trombone legends Joseph Alessi and Jorgen van Rijen. It serves as a possible encore piece in combination with Two-Bone Concerto, which was also written for them. The duet can also be performed by two euphoniums, or as the original vocal duet for tenor and baritone voice. Duration: 4.30

American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honor of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favorite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.

£152.99Triptychon - Johan de Meij
Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931) painted his famous Aino Triptych in 1891, with his own wife Mary as the model. It is inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic and depicts the story on three panels: The left one is about the first encounter of Vinminen and Aino in the forest. The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vinminen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.

Pavane pour une Infante Dfunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) is one of Ravel's most popular pieces alongside Bolro. Written in 1899, the original piano version was arranged for orchestra by the composer and became a highlight of theFrench classical repertoire. Johan de Meij has created a special version for the world-famous trombone soloist Joe Alessi. This unique arrangement for solo trombone (Difficulty: 5) and wind orchestra sounds as if it was originally intended for thisinstrumentation. This work can also be performed with solo flugelhorn (Difficulty 3+), or wind orchestra only. Breathtakingly beautiful!
