The Celtic hymn Morning Has Broken is used as thematic material for this vivid depiction of sunrise on the Scottish landscape. A lush and serene opening with optional flute solo depicts the quiet calm just moments before dawn. A building fanfare ushers in the rising sun, reaching its peak just as the sun breaks through in full glory. The opening strains of the hymn are stated by various sections as a lilting original jig adds to the festive atmosphere, bursting forth together for a rollicking conclusion.

Centrifuge was written for the 2015 Southeastern Louisiana Middle School Band Camp and its director, Paul Frechou. This piece portrays the a centrifuge vigorously spinning with no sign of slowing down or stopping. An allegro tempo is used to fuel the drive and impetus throughout this energetic musical depiction of a whirling perpetual motion dynamo. The opening theme is first presented by clarinets playing in their lowest register as the machine starts up and begins to build up speed. Underlying the entire work is a pulsating percussion section which provides the thrust and forward motion along with various syncopated rhythms contributed by the winds.

This tone poem evokes images of an imaginary saga of the rise to power of a medieval realm led by a valiant young knight against tyrannical forces. A dramatic and bold opening sets the stage as these warriors set out to deliver the peasants from despair and oppression. The action intensifies until the warriors bring the battle to a victorious conclusion with the land and people they fought for emerging to become The Rising Kingdom.

The intriguing title has a double meaning in that the music is in the style of a sultry rhumba and rhumba is also a term used for a group of rattlesnakes.

Many different lyrics exist for the song (some estimate it could be as many as 250), but the central themes are that of longing, love, and friendship. The use of washboard and spoons at one point brings this catchy bluegrass tune to life, helping us connect to this delightful American folk song.

George Washington and the Continental Armys withdrawal from Philadelphia to Valley Forge was one of the darkest chapters of the Revolutionary War. The demoralized mood of the troops is conveyed by the Revolutionary-era hymn Chester in a minor setting. A tempo change ushers in a new spirit as the Continental Army perseveres through the harsh winter and becomes a hardened fighting force. Finally, Chester is triumphantly presented in a major key as the now-formidable army emerges, ready to take up the fight and secure Americas independence.

The work is dedicated to that school and the 2016 graduating class of the Baptist Prep Band Program. This musical work for concert band is based on the hymn Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus with some additional material created for transitions and unity. The piece is written in the style of classic hymn song settings for band and should be played with careful attention to expression and balance.

Driving in Pittsburgh involves a fair amount of vehicular "dancing" in that theres rarely a direct route to get where you want to go. Metro Dances is a work in five sections about this driving experience. Hit the Gas! starts with a full cup of coffee and just a little less time than normal to reach our destination. Traffic "Jam" abruptly comes out of nowhere in true Pittsburgh fashion. Big Trucks appear, appropriately represented with important material for the lower winds. Next is Rush Hour, which features an optional open section with suggested solos for trumpet and alto sax. Finally, Breaking Free culminates with a brisk finish as traffic opens up and there's smooth sailing on a free and open highway.
