Insurrection was composed as a potential concert opener for intermediate band. It is a passionate work with driving and relentless motives that possess a nervous energy. The clashing dissonances heard throughout the work represent a clashing against authority as an insurrection is defined. The middle of the composition gives a short reprieve from the intense and driving rhythms of the outer sections of the work while still retaining moments of dissonance and conflict. A transition takes us back to the opening tempo and dissonant material that eventually makes its way to a triumphant coda.

Handel's Oralorio "Saul", composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. His orchestral suites were usually performed in Ihe open air. Many of his themes rank among the great inventions of musical history. They give his music dignity and greatness and at the same time they remain popular in character. The instrumental movements from 'Saul' are suitable for concerts, including those in churches, for serenades and for contests from intermediate to advanced level.

In 2007, Ewazen was guest composer and commissioned for a new concert band work to celebrate Grand Junction and the towering Grand Mesa that rises above the town. This intermediate band work shares its title with a painting by Frederic Edwin Church of surpassing magnificence and brilliance. Church lived around the time of the Civil War and became known particularly for his striking portrayals of sunsets in the American landscape. The form consists of two main sections connected by an interlude providing both a macro and micro soundscape which reflects and celebrates Church's masterful canvas. Recorded birdsong accompaniment is available from the publisher for this work by emailing [email protected]. Track 1 includes birdsong to be used at the beginning of the piece, track 2 includes 15 seconds of silence, and track 3 includes birdsong to be started at measure 72. The birdsong was recorded during many various wilderness walks, mixed with special panning effects, and produced with audio levels in mind. This means the birdsong will not require the use of outside volume adjustment during the performance. Grade 3. Duration ca. 9'.
