Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershings Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world's most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosenthree of these as the inspiration for this piece: 'The Lincoln Memorial' in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; 'The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial' on which steps the iconic speech 'I havea dream' was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings' speech; and the 'Encore' statue in memory of the world famousAfrican-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this finalmovement, Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamism of Ellingtons' music.

The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. A slow, lyrical treatment of the same folk song serves as the middle section of the piece. Blues for Big Ears is one of Mark Nightingales' Easy Jazzy Tudes, one of Warwick Music's bestselling publications. The band arrangement came about as a result of a stroke of inspiration. After teaching the piece to pupils the idea to arrange it for band was formed. The solo in the middle can be read, or if you have a budding player who likes to improvise feature them. The quavers throughout should not be swung! The Tubas and instruments playing the bass part, should aim for a light sound, and try to imitate the sound of a double bass playing pizziccato. As there are easy parts attached, band directors can include their youngest players, so they don't feel left out. If you have a good drummer, get him to improvise during the fills, rather than read the notated part.
