Long Road has the simple sincerity of a hymn yet is is both beautiful and lush. At the midway point a gentle susurration of bell-sounds, descant recorders and tin whistles appear over sustained brass. There is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key before the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close. Phillip Littlemore has here created a vivid new version for concert band. Band Grade: 4

Grande Fanfare is a powerful fanfare for a festive occasion! The brass section opens the work and leads into a majestic hymn in the middle section, accentuated with subtle trumpet ornaments. The closing section conveys a sense of grandeur and dignity: the perfect work to musically enrich any special occasion. This work was written to celebrate the 50th birthday of the composer's long-time colleague, to whom the composition is dedicated.

£104.99The Source - Bert Appermont
At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.

The "Woodstock der Blasmusik" (Woodstock for Wind Music) is a four-day open air festival that has taken place annually over the last weekend in June in the Upper Austrian community of Ort im Innkreis since 2011. All sorts of bands and ensembles gather to play both traditional and modern wind music. Since its inception, this legendary festival has developed into a great success story. In 2019, Thomas Doss was commissioned to compose this official "Woodstock hymn".

Commissioned by the North Carolina South Central District Bandmasters Association, Liquid portrays the many different ways that water moves around us. From the opening raindrops and first few notes upon which the piece is built,this fast-paced and engaging work takes us through a series of variations that depict cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. The piece culminates with athunderous setting of the 13th-century Latin hymn Dies Irae, or Day of Wrath. Dur: 5:30

Commissioned for a consortium of high school and college bands in the north Dallas region, For the Mystic Harmony is a 10-minute inspirational work in homage to Norwood and Elizabeth Dixon, patrons of the Fort Worth Symphony and the Van Cliburn Competition. Welcher draws melodic flavor from five American hymns, spirituals, and folk tunes of the 19th century. The last of these sources to appear is the hymn tune For the Beauty of the Earth, whose third stanza is the quatrain: "For the joy of ear and eye, For the heart and mind's delight, For the mystic harmony, Linking sense to sound and sight," giving rise to the work's title.

'Galea et Bellum' was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. It uses the hymn 'Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant' as a leitmotif.

Into Your Eyes was commissioned by the Nielse ConcertBand (Belgium) to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The band was formed through the fusion of two existing music societies by the late Michel Versavel, who was the combined ensemble's first conductor. This wonderful chorale is a hymn to his memory, and is dedicated to the further growth and advancement of the band.

The Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is widely recognized as his country's greatest composer, and through his music he helped Finland to develop a national identity during its struggle for independence from the Russian empire. The tone poem Finlandia (1899-1900) played an important role in this part of Finnish history, and the hymn has become an important song to the Finnish people.
