Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening "Allegro," but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return to the opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. It appears in this revised version for Concert Band with the title Freedom's Sword. The opening section recalls days gone by when the Scots and English fought many a battle. The themes are derived from the well-known haunting song Ca' the yowes. The horn calls and off-stage percussion sound of a distant battle and it gradually comes closer. The centre section creates a mood of reconciliation with a dreamy Alto Saxophone solo. The last section now looks ahead with optimism and various bright dance themes appear based onTraditional Scottish reel tunes, one of which is a two-part vocal scat section The piece then heads for its conclusion including a full statement of the main theme.

Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work an especially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert.Duration: 7.30

Sinfonietta No.1 was commissioned by the Foundation of Friends of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. It was first performed by them in 'De Doelen', Rotterdam on the 13th November 1990 (in a joint concert with the Royal Marines Band from Great Britain) which celebrated the 325th anniversary of the Netherlands Marine Corps and coincided with the 45th anniversary of the band and the 175th anniversary of naval music in the Netherlands.The work is in three, linked movements:I: OvertureSeveral contrasting motivic ideas open the work, but none manage to develop into a theme of any sort. Eventually a short theme appears on clarinet, alto saxophone and horn but it is swept away by runs of triplets from the woodwinds. The theme returns, accompanied by the triplets from the woodwinds. The theme returns, accompanied by the triplets, and this leads to a return of the opening material to close the movement.II: AriaThe second movement opens with violent outbursts from the timpani until a simple, mournful tune is presented by flute and bassoon over a sparse accompaniment by the lower brass. Trumpets introduce a quicker, turbulent central section but this leads back to a brief repeat of the original tune, bringing the movement to a peaceful close.III. ScherzoThe final movement is a fast and furious scherzo which bursts into life with a flurry of notes. The vivacious main (woodwind) theme is first played by the flutes and then by the whole woodwind section. A cornet then takes centre stage with a fanfare-like theme which is then taken up by the brass. A bridge passage then leads to a version of this theme for full band. The original flute tune is then developed until the horns introduce a chorale tune which is taken up by saxes and then full band until the opening material reappears. The woodwind and brass themes are then combined and lead to a forceful version of the chorale which becomes more and more dissonant until the opening of the Overture returns to bring the work to a rousing finish.Recorded on QPRM134D THE KINGS GO FORTH, Central Band of the Royal Air Force
