Variations on an Austrian Folksong (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oswald, Gerald

Hot off the press! Composer Gerald Oswald bases this new work on an old Austrian folksong, O du lieber Augustin! The Augustin in questions is a ballad singer and an ad lib poet who apparently wrote this folksong about himself. His grim sense of humour and his attitude towards life, that humour can get you through anything, are readily apparent in this new piece. Gerald Oswald's Variations on an Austrian Folk Song received top honours at the 2010 Austrian Composition Contest.Duration: 6:45

The Barber of Seville Goes to the Devil (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon - Noble, Paul

Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), one of Malcolm Arnold's teachers at the Royal College of Music, was represented in the first Hoffnung. This rumbustious parody of Rossini's style was composed in 1960 for the BBC Concert Orchestra, which introduced it under Vilm Tausky in a broadcast concert that year. (Tausky added the opening bars, in fact, with the composer's approval, which are included in this arrangement.) The piece is a no-holds-barred workout on familiar material such as could be brought off only by a certified master of the modern orchestra with a free-wheeling imaginativeness to match his/her technical skill. Concert Bands and their audiences will get in on the fun of this rousing parody, exploring everything from a Spanish dance to a Street parade.

Two Bagatelles (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Reed, Alfred - Clark, Andy

Alfred Reed's "Two Bagatelles" was first published as a trombone quartet, then enlarged to a brass choir and finally to a full concert band setting. Andy Clark has taken it back to its beginnings and adapted it for the Barnhouse Build-A-Band Series, so that students in very small bands will get a chance to perform music by this master composer. Sounds great if the four basic parts are covered among the instruments present.Duration: 5.00
