Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the rare and extemely valuable exceptions, with these unique variations on a theme of his fellow Russian countryman Michail Glinka. Rimsky-Korsakov, along with Balakirew, Borodin and Mussorgsky and Cui, were the founders of a sort of Russian kind of Romantic Nationalisitc music. Based in St. Petersburg they had conservatoriums in Austria, Germany, Italy and France.

The German composer and arranger Manfred Schneider has been playing for many years with the military band Heeresmusikkorps 300 at Cologne. In the meantime he got a reputation as composer of light symphonic music for concert band in Germany and abroad. In the Molenaar Edition catalogue you find already several of his compositions, such as Upside Down, Song of Freedom, the rhythmical study Rock and Go and the most popular Rock Symphonie. Schneider is well at ease in today's musical styles and this time he was inspired by jazz music. The three-part Jazz Suite starts with a nice jazz waltz; the more quiet second part is a fine jazz ballad, whereas the final part is an exuberant jazz samba. A com-plete percussion section and a piano will provide the typical jazz spirit.

Arthur Ney was born at Potsdam, Germany in 1887. He settled in Switzerland in 1914 and became a Swiss citizen six years later. He conducted numerous wind bands and composed some ten fine marches, such as 'Marschbereit', 'Trompetenruf' and 'Vivat Lucerna', and three overtures for band. He died at Villars-sur-Ollan in 1963. His famous march 'Saint Triphon', named after a small town in the Swiss canton of Vaud, was published by Molenaar Edition as number 52 in the series 'Marstriomfen' (Famous Marches) and was an immediate success as several recordings proved at that time.
