At the end of 1944, Allied troops invaded the Netherlands from Belgium. Hope and longing for freedom, which now seemed so close, swept through the Netherlands: Operation Market Garden was launched. Huge numbers of paratroopers made the dangerous jump to take over enemy territory on the south side of the Rhine. Fierce fighting and attempts to cross and secure the river resulted in heavy casualties for the liberating forces. Ground support from the south came too late and there was no alternative but to call off Operation Market Garden. What looked like a quick liberation of the Netherlands turned into a long, bitter struggle. To make matters worse, a harsh winter followed: hunger and cold ate away at hope and the prospect of a liberated Netherlands. From the out of tune introduction to the pandemonium which reigns at the close, the Country Band March is a marvelous parody of the realities of performance by a country band. While the main march theme is probably Ives' own, the march features an impressive list of quotations that includes Arkansas Traveler," Battle Cry of Freedom," British Grenadiers," The Girl I Left Behind Me," London Bridge," Marching Through Georgia," Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," My Old Kentucky Home," Violets," Yankee Doodle," May Day Waltz and Semper Fidelis. There is rarely anything straight-forward about the use of this material: the tunes are subjected to Ives's famous techniques ofpoly-everything. Of particular interest is Ives's use of ragtime elements to enliven this already spirited march.)

Sing Lullaby, also known as The Infant King, is an arrangement of a Basque Carol. The words were translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) an Anglican priest and folk song collector. The melody was harmonized by the English organist and music editor Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) who included it with other Basque carols (also rendered by Sabine Baring-Gould) in The University Carol Book in 1922. I use a little of Pettman's harmony but also take a different look. I also set it in 3/4 time rather than Pettman's 6/8 (starting with an anacrusis) which allowed me more freedom of expression and a chance to use a few hemiolas in poignant moments. It is a beautiful, tender carol as befits a lullaby though not without a few suspensions which allude to the future trials of the Infant King described in Baring-Gould's words.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15
