A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return.... However, the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother, who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary.This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. Madurodam is a small scale miniature town at Scheveningen (near The Hague) and is since many years one of the most important tourist attractions of the conurbation of Western Holland (called "Randstad"). On a scale 1:25 a charming picture of The Netherlands is given in bird's eye view: several important buildings, churches and townscapes are reconstructed up to the smallest details. There is also a fine transport system: a network of railroads, harbours and motorways covers the park and Madurodam Airport enables air traffic with all continents. The miniature suite Madurodam consists of eight short parts presenting a musical impression of the smallest town in The Netherlands. IReveille the piccolo flute and the side drum announce a new day; II Toy Soldiers there is a military parade in front of the George Maduro Barracks; III Binnenhof/Buitenhof a solemn melody is the main theme of the suite and depicts the state buildings and the nearby lake "Hofvijver" at The Hague; IV Small Windmills everything that moves or whirls at Madurodam is described in this barrel organ waltz; V Intermezzo/Nocturne Madurodam by night is described by a solemn passage played in unison by the lower instruments; VI The Westerkerk Church also the capital Amsterdam is represented with the chimes of the famous Westerkerk church; VII The Muiderslot Castle an elegant pavane recalls medieval atmospheres; VIII "Grande" Finale the windmill theme comes back and then the suite comes to an end with the "Binnenhof" theme, decorated by the first strains of the national hymn "Wilhelmus".

To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

The White Rose was commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band from Harrogate, England. The band takes its name from the county symbol of Yorkshire, the white rose. This partly rhythmic, party lyrical piece opens with a flourish from the trumpets. Following a rhythmic melody in the clarinets there are solo passages for flute and trumpet leading to the finale which brings together elements of the whole piece.
