A magnificent programmatic work for symphonic band that is an offering to Pele, the Goddess of Hawaii's volcanoes. The work opens with primordial, mysterious sounds representing the foreboding volcanoes of Hawaii. We are then introduced to Pele as a tall, beautiful young woman. This is one of the forms she can take and it represents her powers of creation and beauty. This gives way to the active and destructive Pele, often taking the form of an old woman, wrinkled and bent with age. The following lyrical section of the piece is the full statement of Pele's theme of creation and beauty. As this theme settles, we begin to hear the ground pop and crack letting us know that new lava is beginning to bubble and flow. Suddenly and violently, one of her volcanoes erupts, creating massive chaos and destruction. After the eruption subsides, Pele's theme of creation and beauty returns again. A wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance by mature bands. Exceptional in every respect!

On 25th May 2011 a huge fire broke out in the Kalmthoutse Heath nature reserve north of Antwerp. Within a very short time more than 600 hectares of heath land went up in flames. The effect on the surrounding environment was huge. The fire left deepscars affecting the residents, those responsible for heath land, and also the members of the fire brigade who for several days risked their lives to fight the fire.The composition Inferno begins majestically and on a huge scale, exactly as theKalmthoutse Heath is. Soon a theme is introduced into the work in which the magnificent beauty of nature can be heard. We then hear the fires on the heath set to music. Even thefire helicopter can be heard, together with the first discussions thattook place after the alarm was raised with the Kalmthoutse fire brigade.One fact remains at the centre of this work, however: the natural beauty and splendour of the heath landscape. This is expressed at the start of the work in a theme that recursthroughout the piece. Towards the end it is finally replaced by a peaceful conclusion, representing the hope for a speedy regeneration of this wonderful nature reserve. Download the audio file from the 'Attachments'.

Earth - Fire - Water - Air: According to the four element theory of temperaments, earth, fire, air and water are the building blocks of the universe. Without them, life would not exist. They shape our view of the world around us, affect our thoughts and guide our feelings. Classifying our cosmos according to the four elements is probably one of the oldest principles of mankind, dating back to the ancient Greeks, and maybe even before them. While we know more about the elements and atoms, these four are still deeply embedded inthe human psyche. According to ancient Greek philosophers, each of the four elements has its own particular attributes. All other substances in nature aresaid to have emerged from these elements and can be broken down into them.All creatures, including human beings, contain a mixture of these four elements, which shape their senses. The elements are even able to balance out the body and the soul.This suite, Elements of Nature, is in four movements, each corresponding to one of the elements.Dances of Fire: Savage, occult, dangerous - Fire signifies the will of man.The Circle of Water: Flowingly, endless, mighty - Water sums up the feelings of human beings.Planet Earth: Structured, material, fertile - Earth stands for the awareness of the self.Air - The Spirit of Life: Stirring, altering, sensual - Air signifies human intellect.Elements of Nature contains a main theme that combines the female elements (earth and water) with the male elements (fire and air). The four movements are also linked to each other by their motifs. A majestic prologue and an epilogue frame the suite.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: "The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

Il Cantico - Oliver Waespi
Commissioned by the Stadtharmonie Zurich Oerlikon-Seebach for the 2005 WASBE Conference in Singapore"Il Cantico" was inspired by the poem "Cantico di Frate Sole" (Canticle of Brother Sun) by St. Francis of Assisi. In this famous mystic poem, St. Francis expresses his gratitude to God for the creation of nature, the sun, the earth and the living beings."Il Cantico" is based on specific parts of St. Francis's poem. A slow, dreamlike song in the flute leads gradually to the appearance of the sun, the light energy of which is expressed by radiant, powerful music in the brass instruments. The next, slower part of the work is dedicated to the moon (sora luna), a sort of mirror of thesun, and to the stars (le stelle). The music becomes more thoughtful, leads to a calm sound field in the woodwinds and later to a mystic horn solo. Still during the slow part, several chord fragments flash up, thereby announcing the fast ultimate part of the work. This part is about the fire (frate focu) illuminating the night, some sort of representative of the sun on earth. Towards the end of the work, the sun theme is combined with the fire theme.Besides these images, a purely musical structure guides the development of Il Cantico. Almost the entire piece evolves from a basic four-tone cell which appears in the horns and flute at the beginning. Consequently, the work is mainly monothematic and structured in the form of a metamorphosis. The basic cell gradually leads to a rich melodic and harmonic development. This basic material is later completed by a new chord series belonging to the fire theme. In the conclusion both approaches are combined.

On 11 March 1879 in the Austrian town of Neumarkt am Wallersee a huge fire broke out in a brewery, setting fire to at least 60 other houses within one hour. Due to poor equipment and a lack of water, nearly the entire city was burned to the ground. Only the church was spared. This epic piece musically depicts the events in a programmatic way starting from the inauspicious moments shortly before the disaster, throughout the fire, and the final reconstruction of the town with the help of the strong spirit and unity of the Salzburg community. Good times and bad times - we often picture them in shades of either somber black and white or vibrant color. Beautiful landscapes, tranquil villages, places brimming with peace and harmony - yet, in an instant, they can fall prey to the flames. Joy sinks into sorrow, but with every end comes a new beginning. From the ashes, something new arises, like a phoenix reborn. This has always been the way, the eternal circle of life that envelops our world.Imagine a serene landscape nestled in the mountains. Cows graze peacefully on alpine pastures, the sky stretches endlessly in a deep blue, and the warm spring sun casts its golden glow over the earth. From a hillside, we gaze down upon the village below, where quiet and peace reign. It is a place that carries the breath of time within its essence.But then, as if in a dream, the colors fade. Black and white take the stage, and we find ourselves transported 80 years into the past: it is April 20, 1943. The shadows of World War II have reached even St. Jakob am Arlberg. The swastika flag hangs heavily over the village square, while many of the village's men are away, serving on the front lines.On this day, Adolf Hitler's birthday, tragedy unfolds. A fire ignites - small at first, but fed by wind and timber, it grows into an unstoppable inferno. The flames hungrily consume house after house, and finally, they reach the village's beating heart: the church. Alarms echo through the streets, panic spreads like the fire itself, and the villagers fight desperately against the searing heat. Yet, despite their efforts, the steeple, which once rang out time for the village, collapses, and the church burns to its very foundations.The village is wounded, its people left amidst the ruins of their lives. But amid the ashes and despair, the true strength of the community emerges. Shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, they come together to rebuild what seemed irretrievably lost.Gradually, color returns to the images. The wounds begin to heal, tears dry, and life blooms anew. The village rises again, radiant with hope and the resilience born from its darkest hours.For this is the cycle of life: from pain grows strength, and from the ashes of the past, the future is born - again and again.
