Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning 'Lion City'. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. March of the Roughnecks
This new concert march heralds back to the early days of the oil boom in the early 1900s. Commissioned by the Glenpool High School Band, commemorating one of the early oil field discoveries (the "Glenn Pool") in Oklahoma, this march recollects the undeniable spirit of the early petroleum pioneers and oil field laborers (called "roughnecks"). The roughnecks worked long, hard hours to drill for the "black crude" which helped to define the Tulsa area as the "oil capitol of the world" for many decades. The spirited and energetic style of the march makes it a "must play" for festival competition or concert performance.

Holst composed A Moorside Suite for Brass Band in 1928. It is in three movements, this March being preceded by a Scherzo and Nocturne. It is an extraordinary mature work for band from a master composer. There is very little fortissimo writing and there are no semiquavers at all. Instead, Holst has written clean melodic lines with each part being woven into a texture based on the modal lines of English folk music; but these represent its stylistic origin rather than using actual folk tunes as in Holst's earlier band writing. The March is stirring and flowing and is an ideal standalone piece to open or close any concert or festival programme. Duration: 4.15

The Wand of Youth suites were written in 1869 when Elgar was only twelve years old, music written for a play and acted by the Elgar children for a private family theatrical production. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, forty years later, he rearranged with only minor changes and orchestrated them as the two suites titled The Wand of Youth, Suite Nos. 1 and 2. Although the Wand of Youth Suites date from Elgar's mature years, he insisted on calling it Opus 1, because he wrote these pieces originally for piano many years earlier. The March is the first movement of The Wand of Youth, Suite No. 2. The arranger has presented this movement as an example of an excellent concert opener or warm-up march for a festival or contest performance because of its delicacy, yet determination.
