At the Threshold - Bill Calhoun
From the bold fanfare opening based on a perfect 4th to a faster paced jaunty theme that pushes the piece forward, this exciting piece from composer Bill Calhoun will put you on the edge of your seat. There is a beautifully lush middle section that brings some repose before a return of the angular main theme to complete the work. At the Threshold would be an excellent choice for festival performance.

Glacier Canyon - Mike Forbes
Glacier Canyon is not specifically programmatic, but the piece has programmatic elements.?The work begins with the idea of walking up to and peering into a vast glacial canyon. It?then picks up steam as one imagines white-water rafting through the turbulent waters of the canyon below.?The folkloric middle section of the work evokes a sense of American natural beauty before one last romp through the rapids. A perfect selection to show off the musical skills of your young band at a festival.

Feuerfest - Josef Strauss
Feuerfest was written to commemorate the sale of a fireproof safe for a famous Vienna safe company. The piece has a distinctive Austrian flare like that of the Radetzky March, but is much more playable for young bands. Carl Strommen has set this nice little march for use in festival performance. It is a refreshing change from the standard American march fare.

Lonely Travelers - Travis Weller
Layering two songs which speak to the idea of searching for something beyond your current situation, this is an excellent piece for teaching an ensemble to blend so they can hear each other and not be individually heard. Using 900 Miles and The Wayfaring Stranger for compositional material, thematic elements from both are interwoven into the overall musical fabric. 900 Miles' lonely railroad worker is heard in woodwind train whistle effects and the homesickness of The Wayfaring Stranger, as heard in the movie "1917", is effectively portrayed by a moving treatment using long tones with a continuing rhythmic accompaniment. A strong concert, contest or festival choice, this work offers cross-curricular opportunities as well.

Perfect as a challenging contest, festival or concert selection for younger bands or a lighter selection for more advanced groups.
