Chicken In The Kitchen - Les Taylor
This overture is written in the conventional three-part style. Extensive percussion includes anvil, slapstick, wind chimes, and crystal water glasses. The opening and closing themes are written in a spirited and festive style. The middle section explores a more contemporary setting of Thomas Hasting's hymn song, Rock of Ages, Clef for Me. Excellent for contest or festival.

Old Glory - Les Taylor
Although composed in a traditional march style, Old Glory is much shorter and written with the skills of the beginning band student in mind. Ranges are very limited and rhythms are simple and repetitive. The interlude features the percussion and unison trumpets. There is a short tag based on the familiar strains of America (My Country 'Tis of Thee). Great opener for your spring concert or festival. (1:46)

Shenandoah Triptych - Brian Balmages
This three-part fantasy opens with a brisk, light style. The piece moves quickly into a lyrical treatment of Shenandoah. A restatement of the opening motif leads into a slower section in which the original theme is presented both backward and forward in a beautiful harmonic setting. A final section utilizes additional melodic variations and a chorale setting under a woodwind ostinato before coming to a dynamic conclusion. An ideal festival piece!

Ancient Visions - Roland Barrett
After a brief lyrical introduction, Roland Barrett begins a rhythmic ostinato that sets the stage for the heroic statements made by the brass. Open 5ths become very effective in the simple contrapuntal writing that adds to the overall energy. Brief solo trumpet is used in the lyrical middle section before a climax presented by full band. The final section brings back material from the opening with a key change that adds even more intensity to the exciting conclusion. An easy, yet effective contest or festival work.
