Commemorations was written during Martin Ellerby's tenure as Composer-in-Residence to the Regimental Band of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards. The idea behind this particular commission was to write a work commemorating various events in the Regiment's history. The resulting work was an amalgam of such pieces written for specific occasions - hence the work can be performed as a whole or as individual movements. The movements are: Fanfare and Royal Procession; Hougoumont (March in Memoriam); Jacob the Goose (Scherzando Militaire); Elegy, 1944 (Anthem for a Regiment); Blue, Red, Blue (March in Celebration). Coogee Funk is a wild and fast paced exploration of funk riffs and rhythms. Inspired by a trip to Sydney in 2005, it is divided into three core sections. The work opens with a blazing brash fanfare that, after a distant call from an off-stage saxophone quartet, subsides into a drunken nautical seascape. After a series of solos from flugel horn and saxophone the work charges headlong into a wild funk fugue which soon rears out of control. A lonely horn solo brings the piece to a melancholic close.

Dances Fantastique
This exciting new work for concert band is a set of three delightful dances. Opening with a bold fanfare statement, the first dance reveals the melodic material that is the basis for all three movements. The title of this movement, Double Dance, is derived from the second statement of the melody, appearing in doubled rhythmic values. The second movement, Round Dance, the melody is written as a three part round. You could not have a Round Dance without a Square Dance, which is the title of final movement. Lots of fun percussion instruments add interesting timbres throughout. This interesting and clever composition is perfect for contest and festival.
