In 2014, Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (Japan) celebrated its fifteenth anniversary for which this work was composed. From the very beginning, Yoshihoro Kimura has been the artistic leader of the ensemble. Jan Van der Roost became the band's first guest conductor in 2013. In this spectacular work the composer looks back at one of his most famous earlier works 'Apollo', and to Adolphe Sax, the Belgian inventor of the saxophone.

Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president, Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. Inthe poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself, Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. An American Tapestry is a continuous medley of three American folk songs: the happy-go-lucky The Girl I Left Behind Me, the somber and reflective He's Gone Away, and the foot-stompin' hoedown Ol' Dan Tucker. The setting was originally composed for chamber winds (11 players) and has been completely re-scored by the composer in this new edition for full wind ensemble. Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a hymn in his concerts and Memento is an homage to that proud tradition. Starting with a simple and reverent solo trumpet and introducing other brass instruments one by one, the introduction has the sound of a brass band. The woodwinds join in and, with the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, the work builds to a powerful climax and then resolves once again with the solo trumpet. Ideal for festival use, Memento will give your ensemble an opportunity to explore expression and nuance. The second movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont, Memento was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band.
