Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.

Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for wind bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. The piece is a homage to the actual Citadel (also known as the Cairo Citadel). It was built during the medieval Islamic-era fortification of Egypt by Salah ad-Din and developed further by subsequent Egyptian rulers. The Citadel of Saladin was in use during some of the most significant events in Egyptian history, from the time it was constructed to the end of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, which was in power from the early nineteenth century until the 1952 revolution, when the modern Egyptian republic was born. It is written in C-minor. Only the 1st clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is F. The duration and some of the rhythms bring this work to an easy grade 3.

Composed with Renaissance style dances in mind, the composer imagined attending a dance where everything is beautiful, but the dancers are actually crows! With a melody that is simple and primarily on the beat, the compositions starts calmly but gradually becomes more aggressive.
