The Picadore - John Philip Sousa
John Philip Sousa wrote this great march when he was the leader of the Marine band in 1889, and it depicts the experience of a horseman during a bullfight. In a distinctive minor key to start, this is a unique Sousa march. Arranger Andrew Balent has tamed this march down in difficulty without loosing the intent of the original. A nice choice for a warm-up march at contest or festival.

Mysterious and intriguing ghost lights, also known as "will-o-the-wisps" and "spook lights," have been seen around the world. Such ghost-light sightings were reported around the town of Joplin, Missouri starting in 1881. Witnesses say the balls of fire vary in size from a baseball to a basketball and spin down the road before rising above the tree tops and disappearing into the night. The creative writing and special effects of this evocative work re-create the eerie atmosphere of this mysterious phenomenon. This effect can be further enhanced by performing the piece in a darkened auditorium with flashlights creating your very own ghost-light effects.

The composers father, Jack Prescott, was born in 1922, and at the age of 17 became the youngest pilot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was somewhat of a daredevil, flying under drawbridges and doing snap rolls down deserted beaches at an altitude of 50 feet. During World War II he joined the Army Air Corps and flew C-47 transport planes from India to China over the Himalayan mountains. He flew 83 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by President Harry Truman. The heroism of these flights in the face of severe adversity is depicted by the dignified thematic material of the opening. Somewhat dissonant fanfares appear at times, reminding us of the constant dangers that were ever present, before the work concludes in ultimate triumph.

Kevin Houben created with When the Lights Go Down, a wonderful chorale that can be a moment of reflection in any concert program. The resigned, magnificent melodies at the beginning of this composition slowly build up to a highlight with an increasing orchestration. The piece starts with a suggestive Adagio Meditativo, after which the main theme is immediately announced. A central bridge section takes the listener along through the different spheres at which the melodic and rhythmic drums embellish the chorale melodies. Thematic elements from the introduction brings the piece to a quiet and peaceful end. The sheer simplicity with which this work is written, makes it a resplendent, magnificent concert piece. This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skilful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.Duration: 3:35
