This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrieres, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the worst mining accident in Europe and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. This version for wind band was commissioned on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the listing of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin as a UNESCO World Heritage site.Duration: 7.15

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply as an accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The peace of a mountain village is shattered by a dreadful rumour: whether animal or something more disturbing, a creature is said to be prowling the area. After a quiet beginning, the music builds up with tense, nervous lines: fear sets in. The soundscape becomes fantastical, almost like a Halloween night.The villagers gather to hunt down the beast, with the orchestra conveying their determination through clear and energetic writing. The chase accelerates, breathless and spectacular, up to an uncertain outcome: the creature vanishes, without anyone having seen it. The initial chorale returns, calmer but not reassuring. The village regains its tranquillity, while retaining the memory of a mystery that has never been solved.

On 22 January 1963, the signing of the lyse Treaty between France and Germany marked the beginning of a solid relationship of cooperation and friendship, embodying the reconciliation of two nations after decades of conflict. Alliance Day celebrates this treaty by using the French and German national anthems as compositional material. Emblems of each nation, they are transformed throughout the work, symbolising the journey towards unity. The piece moves between intense, lyrical moments and playful, melodic ones. The orchestral climax culminates in an explosion of sound before reaching a grandiose finale.

Talisman tells the story of the "Pierre du Serment", an event that took place in 1639 in the village of Fontenotte, on the border between France and Switzerland. Composed of three brothers and their parents, the Billod family lived peacefully on their farm despite the Thirty Years' War raging around them. When their father was captured by the Swedish mercenaries who plundered the farm, the three brothers vowed to save him, carving their pact in stone according to a Celtic and Viking tradition.Commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Montlebon for its centenary, this work pays tribute to a local story that has become a legend. The conductor, Jean-Pierre Frigo, wanted this commission to mark the orchestra's presence within the region.

This work was commissioned by the Orchestre d'harmonie de Montrouge, in France, the town that hosted Buffalo Bill's show at the 1889 Universal Exhibition and where the Buffalo district still stands.

Chorale for Peace is a song of hope and peace for humanity. In commissioning this work, the wind band of Le Portel (France) wanted to pay tribute to the victims of 8 September 1943, when around 100 Allied planes dropped more than 5,000 bombs on the town of Boulogne and the surrounding area. In fact, this operation was nothing more than a diversion to make the enemy believe that a landing was imminent in the north of France. This music is slow, an adagio commemorating the human sacrifice of this operation. But more broadly, the composer also wanted to express his support for the peoples who, even today, suffer oppression. This set includes an optional choir part that offers the possibility of making an even deeper impression on the listener.
