£85.00Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge
Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band.Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies willmake a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

£149.40The Battle of the Hats - Øystein Sjøvaag Heimdal
The word svimesltt, which is the title of this piece in Norwegian, has two meanings. One meaning is "knocked out", whilst the other, "sltt", means a folk melody/dance.Svimesltt is one of several folk dances, all of them with humorous titles, originally written by ystein Olsen Vadsten. Norwegian culture is the basis for these dances, both rhythmically and melodically. The accompaniment has brought this funpiece into the 21st Century. When it comes to Svimesltt, it is the traditional dance "halling" that is the inspiration. Halling is a rather wild dance, where the man tries to win the heart of a lady by attempting to kick a hat off a stick, held up in the air. This iswhere "The Battle of the Hats" gets its distinctive name A truly Norwegian tradition. The composer wanted to write a "crazy" melody, which highlights how "knocked out" a man can be by love, as he tries to win the chosen ones heart.

£116.40Quatre Jours a Paris - Kees Vlak
1) 'Jour de Fte. A quiet sunday atmosphere on the Avenue Foch, a residental area for the well-to-do in Paris. It begins with full-sounding chords, with a wealth of added tones. It seems as if many bells are tolling. Birds are tweeting high in the trees. After all this there is a very simple theme without any tension just like a leisure walk. The movement ends the same way it started.2) 'Jour de Java. The 'Java' is the dance of the Bohemians, the Paris gypsies. It is a very capricious dance, which is represented by at certain moments shrill harmonies and the unexpected changes in tonality of this movement.3) 'Jour de Pluie. A rainy day. Seated behind the windows of a sidewalk caf we observe the reflections on the wet streets. Under a fly-over an accordeon plays a sad melody. Old memories pass through our minds.4) 'Jour de Can-Can. Whenever one hears 'Can-Can' the name of Jacques Offenbach crosses our minds. It is the dance of the Folies Bergres, a festival which never seems to end. All the time new solo-dancers come jumping forward.

When the dancers leave she continues to exercise by herself and tries out her solo part. She does not do well and feels very tired. She sits down on a bench in the corner of the ballet room and thinks she needs some rest; so she lies down and falls asleep. She dreams she is standing in the ballet room, trying to rehearse her solo dance performance. But she does not succeed to dance as she wants and she gets more and more nervous. Suddenly she makes a wrong movement and falls down; her ankle is bruised and so she cannot dance at all.She is desperate and quite lonely because her dream goes up in smoke. She is now surrounded by a group of doctors, who examine her ankle, put on a bandage and tell her to rest. When the doctors disappear a gang of little devils come into the ballet room; they tease our poor dancer and threaten her with little arrows, while they keep dancing and stamping. The ballerina tries to get rid of the little monsters, but in vain. This looks like a real nightmare! All of a sudden the devils and the pain disappear. She tries to get up and awakes little by little. She now realizes it was only a bad dream. She feels relieved and goes to the dressing room in order to dress for the premiere performance. Her solo performance in the finale of the ballet is a real big success. Her most precious dream has been fulfilled, in spite of or thanks to the nightmare.

£159.00Greek Folk Song Suite No. 2 - Franco Cesarini
After the great success of the Greek Folk Song Suite that has lasted for over twenty years, Franco Cesarini once again ventures into the long and rich tradition of Greek folk music. In his Greek Folk Song Suite No. 2, the three movements that form the piece are named after the three dances reworked by the composer. The first movement, Samiotissa is a kalamatianos, whose most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8-time signature. It is a festive dance, today considered the Greek national dance, which has roots dating back to antiquity. The second movement, Kato sto jalo is a zeibekiko, a slow-paced dance performed by only one man at a time which was apparently originated among the warriors of Ancient Anatolia. The third and last movement, Chasaposerviko, is the fast part of the hasapiko dance and is characterized by its more extensive form.A new journey into the Greek folk tradition that will delight both performers and audience.

£64.99Siciliano and Tarantella
This distinctive work by Michael Oare is based on two Italian dance forms dating back to the Baroque period. Siciliano opens with a delicate 6/8 melody in the flutes which is developed and passed around to various sections of the band. In contrast, Tarantella is a brash and uptempo dance featuring a rhythmic pulse accompanying the flowing melodic lines. Quite a nice pairing of tunes with historical importance.
