Panic Button (CB) - Paul Saggers
Panic Button was commissioned by Bert Van Thienen especially for 2022 World Music Contest in Kerkrade (NL). The composer was given complete freedom musically, however, he was given two conditions. First, it had to be an atypical work, a composition that puts the orchestra in a different perspective than the traditional repertoire and be suitable for both concert and competition stages. Second, it had to give the musicians the opportunity to go completely wild for a while. On the one hand, to shake off any stress and, on the other, to give them energy for the rest of the program. Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022.Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales... don't they?Andreas Ziegelbck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universitt, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

Chasing Light is a one-part composition in 3 movements. The work opens with a slow introduction, dark in atmosphere, in which the main thematic ingredients are exhibited. This is followed by a fast movement, Chasing Light, in which previously heard thematic material is incorporated. Characteristic of this middle movement is the driving motoric movement that galvanises the aforementioned hunt. An extended Euphonium solo bridges the gap to the final movement. Here ethereal sounds dominate. Harp and Mallets dominate the soundscape, symbolising the light that has finally been achieved.The title Chasing Light can be seen as a metaphor for striving to solve major problems facing the world today, such as the Corona pandemic and the climate problem, among others.Chasing Light was composed on behalf of Stadsfanfaren Izegem, conducted by Hans Demeurisse for the World Music Contest 2022 in Kerkrade.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.

The source of inspiration for this work is the magical world of gemstones. The special powers of four of these stones appealed to composer Bert Appermonts' imagination. In this work, different distinguishing atmospheres are evoked. The work is composed as a suite containing four movements: Carnelian: The Stone of Perseverance, Opal: The Stone of Misfortune, Amethyst: The Stone of Wisdom and Amazonite: The Stone of Playfulness.
