Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanic mountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement (Saghalie) pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The second movement captures the beauty of the maiden Loowit, with haunting flute and English horn solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement, Tanmahawis, utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments, and rhythmic percussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of a winning steed. It was written for the 20th anniversary concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band in New Jerseyat the request of the band's founding director, Dr. C. Christian Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much more than a typical one mile horse race and depicts the event from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energyat the starting gate and the ensuing excitement approaching the first turn, the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch, and the increasing drama as the pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the bigfinish. Recorded by the Ridgewood Concert Band, Christian Wilhjelm, conductor. (Grade 4)

The idea for Sdwind Overture arose during dinner with the conductor Werner Buchmann and a few members of his band. Ferrer Ferran accepted the commission to write the work and asked Mr. Buchmann jokingly to sing him a motif offive notes that would serve as the leitmotif of the composition.
