The title of the work is a pun on the term 'concerto grosso', a piece in parts for a group of solo instruments and orchestra. The German composer Joseph Ignaz Schnabel (1767-1831) was a descendant of a musical family. During his lifetime he occupied several musical posts including Violinist, Organist, Concertmaster, Conductor, Music Teacher and managing director of the Royal Institute for Church Music. Schnabel composed masses, hymns, vespers, military music and a clarinet concerto. His choir work Transeamus usque Bethlehem is still widely performed and Wil van der Beek has produced this excellent arrangement for concert band which does justice to the original.

Fantasy for Marimba - Hayato Hirose
Fantasy for Marimba was commissioned by the outstanding Japanese marimba player, Fumito Nunoya. Although it is written in concerto style, the piano not only accompanies the solo marimba but also plays an important part in the development of the work. Vocalise is the second movement from Satoshi Yagisawa's Trombone Concerto. Yagisawa finally decided to publish this movement as a separate piece, since it has been frequently performed independently and on the euphonium, tenor saxophone or the trombone. Just like the title implies, Vocalise exhibits a warm, gentle chorale-like feel that any audience will enjoy. Also available in an edition with piano accompaniment.

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Band grade 4, soloist grade 5. Dit Concertino voorklarinet werd geschreven voor Peter Holligan , een vriend van de componist, en de Fife Youth Concert Band (Schotland). Het werk is gebaseerd op de traditionele Keltische muziek, en bestaat uit drie delen. 1. Reel - een snelle dans die eindigt in een sfeervolle, maar virtuoze cadens. 2. Lament - een trage en melancholische melodie die het geluid van doedelzakken verbeeldt.3. Een snelle en virtuoze dans in 6 / 8 maatsoort met Ierse invloeden. The so called first horn concerto in D KV 412 is actually incomplete, and comprises a number of different parts, which according to musicologists don't really fit well together at all. The original finale movemnt (KV514) only existed in sketch form, with string accompaniment and was lost during World War II. In spite of this however, this remains one of the most popular horn concertos.
