Commemorations was written during Martin Ellerby's tenure as Composer-in-Residence to the Regimental Band of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards. The idea behind this particular commission was to write a work commemorating various events in the Regiment's history. The resulting work was an amalgam of such pieces written for specific occasions - hence the work can be performed as a whole or as individual movements. The movements are: Fanfare and Royal Procession; Hougoumont (March in Memoriam); Jacob the Goose (Scherzando Militaire); Elegy, 1944 (Anthem for a Regiment); Blue, Red, Blue (March in Celebration). Fanfare for the Champions was commissioned by the municipal concert band of Landeck under the direction of Helmut Schmid on the occasion of the 375th anniversary of the band. The orchestra, which premiered Nostradamus (a key work of the composer), and which also commissioned Mantua - Freedom of the Eagle, has forged a friendship with the composer over a period of many years. This orchestra has participated in the major European competitions and has always performed with distinction--thus the title of the work Fanfare for the Champions.The fanfare, which is written in a style typical for the composer, should convey a feeling of happiness: the feeling to have created or accomplished something special. Firedance was commissioned by Warwick Castle for one of its celebrated annual fireworks concerts at the Warwick and Leamington Festival. The first performance was given by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins on July 1st 2000.Keith Allen, musical director of Birmingham Symphonic Winds, heard the piece at Warwick Castle, and commissioned a new arrangement for BSW's 10th anniversary concert on 16th November 2002 at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham, when it was conducted by the composer.Firedance starts with jagged rhythms in a minor tonality, and apart from a final accelerando, keeps the same pulse for its near ten-minute span, becoming gradually more celebratory, major-key and melodic.This new version for concert band is dedicated to all members of Birmingham Symphonic Winds with great affection. - GW
