Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921) put an end to his career as leading trumpeter with several famous London symphony orchestras to become a full-time composer. He became world famous with his soundtrack music for 'The Bridge over the River Kwai', but he composed a lot of orchestral, vocal, ballet and chamber music. He wrote several works for wind band and for brass band, such as three 'Little Suites for Brassband'. The 'Little Suite Number 1' Opus 53 for orchestra (followed by the Second Opus 78) consists of a 'Prelude' (Maestoso), a 'Dance' (Allegretto) and a well-known 'March' (Allegro con brio). The march is still on the concert repertoire of many British military bands.

The Fanfare embraces the splendour and grandeur of our planet Earth, molto grandioso, and culminates in a chordal cluster - a blaze of brass and percussion in G major, describing feelings of optimism at the start of the 21st century. Performance time 1'50". Millennium March - constructed along classical lines, the theme of Millennium March is catchy and not without humour. Its recurring motif on trumpets, con brio, develops the opening bars of the Fanfare. The March gathers momentum through several dramatic key-changes and ends with a surprise flourish of chromaticism, marked Tempo Apocalyptic. Cannons and fireworks are optional! Performance time 4'10'

From Heartland to Heaven
Commissioned to honor a beloved teacher who had passed away, this eloquent piece both begins and ends with warm and moving chorale sections. The contrasting allegro con brio theme is full of energy and vitality. While this piece is not very difficult, it features close contemporary harmonies and it provides ample opportunities for expressive playing especially in the woodwinds. Includes lots of tasteful percussion parts to keep your drummers involved. A wonderful composition that will pay big musical dividends and it is a wonderful choice for contest or concert performances. VERY VERY NICE!
