Monck's March - Nigel Hess
This concert overture, commissioned by the Band of the Coldstream Guards in 2002, tells the story of General Monck's historic journey involving seven thousand troops on the arduous march from Coldstream to London during the winter of 1660. The main tune heard throughout the piece is based on an old traditional melody called Monck's March, long celebrated in the folk and morris-dancing worlds.

Extra Score. This work was especially composed for Rachel Smith and the Regimental Band of Her Majesty's Coldtream Guards. It is essentially rhapsodic in nature and derives much of it's melodic material from the harmonic implication of the 'Neapolitan Sixth' chord - that of the flatten supertonic, mostly found in minor key tonalities. The composer gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Rachel Smith in editing the solo part for both performance and publication. Among the Coldstream Guard's duties is the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace where their reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the 'Red Machine'. The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group; from the aggressive, machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavoured waltz through the recapitulation and vivace finale. Listeners may hear references to music associated with the band, from Holst (the Planets) through the opening phrase of the chorale Ein Feste Burg - familiar to British Guards Bands from the troop march Huguenots.
