The Amsterdam Suite, written in 1995 and first performed by the Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra the following year, seeks to convey some impressions of a city I have visited several times. It opens with the waltz sequence, Barrel Organs, recalling the hurdy-gurdies positioned at strategic points in the city with the aim of parting tourists with their loose change. The tunes, however, are mine rather than an attempt to reproduce the real thing. Amsterdam takes its Saturday nights seriously, with the result that those who get up (or are still up) early on Sunday morning will find themselves in eerily deserted streets, whose atmosphere to me suggests one instrument above all, the saxophone, which plays a prominent part in Lonely City. The Saturday nights themselves are depicted in Trams and Crowds. I have taken liberties with the chronology for the obvious musical reason of wanting to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. The basic structure is very much that used by Eric Coates for similar piece, a bustling outer section with a quick march trio, presented in a fuller and more embellished orchestration on each of its three appearances. - Matthew Curtis.

The third movement begins in the early morning hours of April 18th, 1906. As the city sleeps the fault line rips and the Earth begins to tear apart. Devastation and destruction ensue as the city turns to chaos caused by the tremors and aftershocks of the earthquake. An odd-metered march develops that signifies the soldiers marching in to take control of the city as it burns in the aftermath of the quake.Duration: 9.30

Established in the late 1800's this area of the city embodies Hollywood's vision of San Francisco with its views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The story of the Heinzellmannchen (Gnomes) is connected to the German city of Cologne. The gnomes were small creatures living underground but appeared during the night, when the people were asleep, doing all the work that had to be done in the city, so that the citizens of Cologne could be lazy, relaxing the whole day. At last, there was a tailor's wife getting so curious about the gnomes that she scattered dried peas onto the floor so that the gnomes slipped and fell, making a lot of noise. The gnomes got infuriated and disappeared forever and the citizens of Cologne must thereafter do all the work themselves.Kurt Noack (1893-1945) was a German composer, arranger and orchestra leader, working mainly with light music and marches. The characteristic piece Heinzellmannchens Wachtparade (Gnome's parade) from 1912 is his most famous composition, originally written for piano.This arrangement is made a little parodic, filled with joyful interjections, trying to give these little gnomes a bit of character, with pictures from Disney's Santa's workshop in mind.Duration: 7.00

Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how Symphony No. 3 "Urban Landscapes" Op. 55, was born, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements: The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon, Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gates, which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. The first movement, preceded by a short slow introduction in which the main theme is presented in an almost dreamlike form, metaphorically represents the city at dawn. The sudden change of time symbolizes the start of activities with all its noises and sounds: you can hear the bell that announces the closing of the subway doors, the sound of cars speeding by, the siren of a patrol car. If the first movement represents the day, the second introduces a nocturnal environment: a melancholic melody played by the English horn anticipates a more animated tempo depicting melodies coming from jazz clubs. Powerful fanfares that take up the second theme of the first movement introduce the third movement. In this finale, the role of the two themes is reversed compared to the first movement and one takes the place of the other in a kind of games of mirrors.
