In 2008 the trombonist, Chris Jeans, was invited to be a featured soloist at a British Trombone Society event. He contacted Stan Kitchen at Studio Music Company to see if he had any new material for trombone. Stan then got in touch with me, as I had already written a piece for another trombone player, Brett Baker. This piece, 'Shout' was programmed for the same event so we needed to find something new for Chris.The title 'Blue Jeans' came to my mind, thus linking a blues-style piece with the obvious reference to Chris's surname. I spoke to Chris and he liked the sound of it so then I had to go away and write a solo to match the title!I managed to get a version with piano accompaniment done in time for Chris to perform at the trombone event and have now had a chance to complete the band version. Chris is a great chap, a good friend and a wonderful trombone player so I hope people enjoy listening to this solo that bears his name.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30

Nightlights was commissioned by Chris Jeans and Don Collins for Youth Brass 2000, to be used as part of their programme at the 2019 European Championships. Written during January 2019, Nightlights received its world premiere by Youth Brass 2000, conducted by Chris Jeans with Siobhan Bates as soloist, at the 2019 European Brass Band Championships in Montreux, Switzerland.Originally written as a Tenor Horn solo, this version for Tuba was arranged for and is dedicated to Dr Joanna Ross Hersey.Nightlights is intended to illustrate a winter's evening looking out across Lake Geneva from Montreux. Tiny lights appear beneath the mountains from faraway homes and vehicles, flickering in the distance and shimmering in the reflections on the water. Tiny, blinking nightlights against the inky blue of the clear sky. Thousands of stars shine above, blurring the boundaries between land, water, and the heavens into a sparkling ether. Transfixed, the bustle of sounds and lights from Montreux seems a lot further away than it is in reality. Eventually, each little light blinks out, one at a time, leaving the chill of the cold night air and an empty sky.Duration: 4.30

A Phoenix Fanfare opens with bold, rhythmic motifs built around the interval of a perfect fourth, a musical gesture symbolising strength and renewal. These rhythmic ideas are energetically passed around the wind band, creating a sense of movement and vitality. As the piece progresses, textures build and interplay intensifies, culminating in a striking moment where glissando horns soar above the ensemble--this feature should be given due prominence, as it evokes the mythical rise of the phoenix and adds a dramatic flourish to the conclusion.In contrast, Journey into Light captures the feeling of a 'return to normality' following the lifting of COVID restrictions. The music begins with a short passage in a reflective minor key, representing the uncertainty and isolation of lockdown. Gradually, optimism emerges as the harmony brightens and the tempo increases. The arrival of the presto section marks a turning point--joyful, exuberant, and full of life. From here, the music remains uplifting, celebrating the renewed freedom to rehearse, perform, and connect through music.This piece would make an ideal concert opener or start to a second half of a concert.Duration: 3.30

A four movement work based on wheels! Includes:Big Dipper - the little carriage slowly climbs before hurtling off on its journey. Then another climb takes it even higher and off it goes again, even faster - the high woodwind instruments hint at the screams and shouts of the the passengers, before the carriage comes to a rest and everybody gives a sigh of relief.London Eye - the giant white wheel turns slowly and silently, taking the passengers high above London's River Thames, with views over the Houses of Parliament and the whole of the capital's skyline - breathtaking!Wagon Train - horses are pulling the heavy wooden wagons, slowly trundling across the American plains, taking the settlers to their new homes in the West.The No. 57 Bus - the bell sounds, and off the bus goes - the music changes when the bus comes to a stop to let passengers on and off - "ting ting" and off it goes again - another change in the music, another stop - a run home, and two final rings on the bell - a good trip!Duration: 9.00
