One of Claude T. Smith's last completed works, "Raise Your Voice in Song" was commissioned by the Nebraska Music Educators Association for the 50th Anniversary on NMEA! It was written for the 1986 All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra for their combined performance on November 22, 1986 in Hastings, NE. This majestic work lends itself as a finale, for band alone, or a combined performance with string orchestra and/or choir (available separately). There are two sets of lyrics (secular and Christmas). The request came from his friend Russell Burgess, a well-known conductor in the English musical scene and head of the Wandsworth School Boys' Choir through the '60s and '70s. Rutter responded with a six-movement work for orchestra, boys' choir, and mixed chorus, called When Icicles Hang. He chose his texts, characteristically, from Elizabethan and other early English poetry, each text dealing with images from the wintery season, be they the cold, ice-bound landscape and its winds; an older man's weariness in the face of the season; or the contrapuntal pleasures of ale and honey love for those safely inside on winter nights. The movements are: I. Icicles; II. Winter Nights; III Good Ale; IV Blow, blow, thou winter winds; V. Winter wakeneth all my care; VI . Hay, ay. With sparkling orchestration which has been faithfully set for Concert/Wind Band, the work may be performed with chorus as originally written, or may be performed effectively by band alone. Christmas Night is John Rutter's setting of a traditional French Carol, with words by John Rutter. It became the theme of one of his Christmas albums, focusing on the central event of the Christmas story, the birth at Bethlehem, and on the characters in that story: the angels, the shepherds, the wise men, and the mother with her child. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Band alone. The arrangement is technically very easy, and is a showpiece of the colours and textures of the families of band instruments.
