In 1725 J.S. Bach composed the cantata BWV79 Gott, der Herr, is Sonn' un Schild for the celebration of the Reformation. Originally written for three vocal soloists, choir, and orchestra, Cantata No. 79 is partially based on thewell-known hymn Now Thank We All Our God, the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with an ensemble from the thirdmovement (Choral).

Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The work's premire took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frdric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.

Spirit of Olympus was commissioned by director Elaine Wersky and the Olympus Music Program on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Olympus Junior High School. It was asked that the celebratory work also also provide a middle section that could serve the school as an alma mater for the school. The true spirit of the student body is reflected in the great opening fanfare in the high brass with strong support from the percussion section. The alma mater is first presented by the full woodwind choir supported with glistening metallic percussion as accompaniment. A lush, full band treatment follows, emphasizing the majestic import of the meaningful melody. An energetic finale brings the work to a fittingly proud and regal close.

Dona Nobis Pacem is a free fantasia on this round, which itself naturally forms a part of the piece. Master-composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, in 1770, but he lived in Vienna from 1792, until his death in 1827. With his innovative style, he has had a great influence on Western classical music. 'Die Himmel rhmen des Ewigen Ehre' (The Heavens Extol the Glory of God) is the first line of the poem 'Die Ehre Gottes in der Natur', which was written by Christian Frchtegott Gellert (1715-1769). The music that Beethoven composed to the text, was published in 1803, as the fourth Lied (song) in a cycle of six (6 Lieder nach Gedichten von Gellert, opus 48). Thomas Doss has arranged the song - in which nature, as created by God, is mirrored majestically - into a wonderfulwork for concert band.Choir parts available separately: 1589-09-050 M
