Providing a unique concert experience, this programmatic work depicts the story of what newspapers in 1916 described as "the poison soup plot"! At a Chicago banquet for dignitaries and politicians, a mass murder plot involving poison soup was hatched and nearly successful. However, thanks to a large number of unexpected guests, the dilution of the soup to feed everyone, and a quick thinking doctor with an antidote, tragedy was averted with no loss of life. Musical cues follow the events, and detailed program notes are included with the suggestion of including dancers to help tell the story. Imaginative and entertaining!

Ravinia Overture - John Tatgenhorst
John Tatgenhorst's exiting new work is a musical tribute to one of America's greatest summer music venues, Ravinia, which is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Written in four short movements, the opening Pastorale conveys the beauty and serenity of the grounds. Fanfare announces an exciting concert prelude. Promenade is a short spirited march which leads to the majestic Finale which is thematically linked to the opening motives.

William Paris Chambers (November 1, 1854 - November 13, 1913) was an American composer, cornet soloist and bandmaster who wrote several cornet solos and nearly 90 marches. His most famous marches are Chicago Tribune, The Boys of the Old Brigade, Hostrausers, Northwind and Revelation. The King of Terror March was published by J.W. Pepper in 1882. Its title is thought to be inspired by a carnival or midway attraction. The march is fast and furious, with all the drama and ferocity thats reflected in its name. Although one of his earlier marches, King of Terror contains all of the characteristics of Chambers famous bravura band writing.

This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton & Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance. Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine, the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The results can be heard in this delightful and unusual work.
