Haleakala (House of the Sun) - Carl Strommen
Named for a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Haleakala is a boldly conceived and sumptuously scored tribute to the wonder of nature. A series offerilliant fanfares, with prominent use of the brass section, leads to a broad chorale theme for the wind section that soon acquires a noble counter melody from the horn choir. After a splendidly sonorous climax, the fanfare material returns to close the piece in a grand style. This selection will work particularly well as a concert opener.

Fanfare and Patrol - Carl Strommen
Beginning with a Copland-esque brass and percussion fanfare, this piece leads to an all-out lush harmonic flourish, subsiding into a military-style patrol march, with the sounds of echoes, evoking troops marching over the hill and then moving away. Fanfare and Patrol finishes off with the climactic return of the main fanfare.

With its title is taken from the text of Walt Whitman's poem "Leaves offerass," Setting Sail is an epic new piece that is expansive and sophisticated. Its luxuriant, reticent opening moves into beautiful lyrical lines and all-encompassing harmonies before leading into the journey at sea, punctuated with a cool 6/8 groove. To finish, we have a climactic return of the original lyrical material. This is a large-scale work offeramatic proportions.

Feuerfest - Josef Strauss
Feuerfest was written to commemorate the sale of a fireproof safe for a famous Vienna safe company. The piece has a distinctive Austrian flare like that of the Radetzky March, but is much more playable for young bands. Carl Strommen has set this nice little march for use in festival performance. It is a refreshing change from the standard American march fare.
