And Still, the Spirit (Spirit of the Sequoia) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.Duration: 8:15

God So Loved the World (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stainer, John - Horner, Kevin

The Crucifixion, an oratorio composed by John Stainer in 1887 was designed in such a way that most church choirs would find it accessible. Also, it helpfully includes five hymns so that the congregation can contribute also. Whilst the text for this work was written by W J Sparrow Simpson, who worked with Stainer in an earlier work entitled 'Mary Magdalene', that used in this setting of 'God, so loved the world' is literal from John 3 verse 16 in the scriptures. This movement of 'The Crucifixion' is the most popular and widely used.

Spider Legs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

Spider Legs is a vibrant Latin dance number. Although I have used Latin rhythms in pieces in recent years this is the first time I have returned wholeheartedly to one of my favourite types of music since I wrote Tiptoe Tune in 2001. Typically I wrote it when I should have been writing something else but I really enjoyed going back to these rhythms. Stylistically Spider Legs can best be described I suppose as 'Merengue House' but perhaps it is better without any description! It was composed in 2014, shortly after the birth of my granddaughter Emma Louisa who was nicknamed 'Spider Legs' at the time and the name seemed to fit the music so well that I could not resist it.

Heroes Near and Far (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

Each of the five movements of this innovative work is designed to invoke a particular type of emotion associated with leadership. Courage is stately in nature and written in a marcato style. Vision is playful in character and focuses on mixed meters as well as mixed emotions. The lyrical and sensitive Compassion is meant to stir the soul, while the contrasting Selflessness offers some of the most intense and demanding music of the set. The energetic final movement Heroes will bring to mind your own favourite superhero! Educator and speaker Scott Lang helped develop the concept for this unique work, and has made available supplemental curricula centred around leadership and character development. This material is tied to the Common Core Standards relating to reading, writing, music, art, and critical thinking. Each movement and its accompanying curriculum can stand on its own, allowing the director the flexibility of using as much or as little as desired. A tremendous resource for today's teacher!Duration: 9:30
